Jack’s Skull Fracture
July 8, 2008 12:18 pm–Well, Jack now has a great story to tell his kids one day! Two & half weeks ago, Jack & the traveling swing fell off the table at Opa & Oma’s house. I know, I know the table isn’t the safest place to set those, but the alternative was on the floor where he would be poked, pushed, and squeezed by his cousins & brother! We were all standing in the kitchen when it happened, needless to say sheer panic abrupt-ed. He landed on the rug still strapped in. He was, I think, more angry that it woke him up then anything. I checked him over, & wouldn’t let him go back to sleep for awhile. He seemed fine, no loss of consciousness or vomiting. The rest of the day he was a little more fussy than normal, but was eating & sleeping just fine. The next morning I called the pediatrician, I was concerned of ear infection because he was so congested and mentioned the fall. They asked all the normal questions and said I could bring him in, but there wasn’t much they would do except peek in his ears. Considering he was just happy & playing, I didn’t see the need to take him. When he woke up from his nap at 3:30, I noticed his head was completely deformed. He had a big fluid pocket on the right side of his head that was pushing his right ear down towards the ground. At first, I was in such shock and thought I was just seeing things, so I walked calmly to Donald and told him to turn around and look at Jack’s head. He immediately freaked out and wanted to go to the ER. Levi was still taking his nap, so we called the pediatrician’s office and told them we were coming in and then called a friend of ours who lives behind us to come over and stay with Levi. Jack in the mean time was happy and smiling and acting like nothing was wrong!!!! The doctor did not seem too concerned especially since Jack was so alert and content. She thought it could possibly be one of three things: a skull fracture, an infection or just a bug bite that had a bad reaction. She sent us for a CT- Scan since we did not know exactly the cause of edema. We went to Vanderbilt, had the CT-Scan (Jack was strapped down & could not move anything
he did great though!) after 20 minutes we got a call from the Peds office saying Jack had a skull fracture. Everyone seemed shocked, because he was not fussy or crying even when they pushed on his head. To make a long story short, we had to get admitted through the ER and see the neurosurgeon, who walked in for 2 seconds and said we see this often, nothing we can do, it will heal on it’s own. Then we got discharged and got to take our sweet little man home!!!! God is good & we just praise HIM for His protection over Jack.
Jack has had a recheck and is doing great! The boy is one tough fellow with a tough noggin! He gained 1/2 lb just in the 6 days between the fall and recheck! probably because Mommy fed him everytime he fussed ( I hated to have him cry, I didn’t want his head to hurt
We finally moved Jack into his own room! I don’t know why it was so hard for me this time. Levi was out at 5 weeks!!!! Jack is doing fine, still a little porker and needing to eat at least 2x during the night, but I am working on that, because I am exhausted!!!!
Hope everyone is having a fun-filled summer!
